Black Women Making History At The 2023 Grammy's
The 2023 Grammy's was an event filled with milestones. Besides being the 65th edition of the awards show, this year’s Grammy's was also another victorious year for Black women. And quite literally, history was made this year as legacies were cemented and deserving superstars were given the due credit that was fitting of their contributions to the music industry.
In summary, most of the major awards categories during the night were handed over to deserving Black women superstars and talents. The hit rapper Lizzo won Record of the Year for her single “About Damn Time” — the win earned her the title of being the first Black woman to win the award since Whitney Houston in 1994.
Temilade Openiyi, popularly known by her star name Tems, became the first pure Nigerian woman to win a Grammy for her contributions to fellow artist Future’s hit song, “Wait For U”. Her win was classified under the Best Melodic Rap performance category.
One of the biggest highlights of the night was when the iconic megastar Beyoncé became the most-awarded artist in the Grammy's entire history. The victorious night for Queen Bey which saw her earn four more Grammy's cemented her spot as the most successful Grammy contestant of all time — with a total of 32 awards earned in her entire successful career.
During the 65th Grammy Awards, Beyoncé was able to win four more awards, namely, Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and Best Dance/Electronic Album award for her hit 2022 album “Renaissance” which officially crowned her as the winningest artist in Grammy history.
Indeed, this year’s edition of The Grammy Awards is a memorable occasion for Black women, and the music industry is definitely at the top of its game at the moment, and we can’t wait to find out what next year’s batch of artists have in store.
