The Top 5 Most Successful Talk Shows of 2021
The world of talk shows was shaken up in 2021 with surprising shifts in popularity. Almost every Talk Show has moved in ranking, with some of the previously popular shows struggling to even make the top 5 list anymore! Here are the productions and hosts averaging millions of viewers throughout 2021, and why have they garnered or kept their popularity in this entertainment game that is home to television media.
1 – The View
The View talk show was ranked no.1 in households in 2021, with an average viewership of 2.284 million. The show has been running since the 90s and features a cast of multi-generational women that discuss a wide range of topics such as cosmopolitics and entertainment news. Recently, the show’s co-host, Whoopi Goldberg, has been suspended from her role over a controversial Holocaust comment, so only time will tell if this impacts the ratings for this current year. The suspension caused outrage on social media, triggering debates over whether Jews by definition are considered a "race" or a "religion," challenging the validity of Whoopi's argument. She has since issued a statement claiming it is "an honor" to sit at The View's table.
2 – Gutfeld!
A talk show with a much shorter lifespan than The View has made huge leaps in the ratings since its 2015 release date. Averaging 2 million views in 2021, It had even overtaken The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in August of that year. Gutfeld! Offers satirical comedy on politics, pop culture and social commentary with its conservative comic host, Greg Gutfeld. Its rise in popularity is telling in the user reviews on Google that are less controversial than the other popular talk shows that have been around longer.
3 – The Jimmy Kimmel Live show
Another show on the list that’s dominated tv entertainment for nearly two decades is the still widely popular Jimmy Kimmel Live show that averaged 1.5 million views in 2021.The host Jimmy Kimmel interviews many famous guests, from viral stars to celebrities and is known for his comedic wits.
4 - The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
Once the most popular talk show averaging 3 million views in 2020 has now dropped down in ratings, with the show being overtaken in views by both Gutfeld! And The Jimmy Kimmel Live show! While the show is still massively popular, mainly in credit to the smart wits of the host, the Google reviews have now amassed more negative user ratings than positive. Most of the feedback surrounds how the show has become basic and unable to stand apart from other talk shows.
5 – Ellen DeGeneres
Once the show was the go-to for celebrity interviews, which would have been much higher in this list in previous years, now has seen a steep decline of viewership between 2020 to 2021, going from 2.6 million views to an average of 1.4 million—declining 44%! The talk show received lots of controversy throughout the COVID 19 pandemic for fostering toxic workspace culture and cancelling a popular game show segment. This might be the last time the Ellen DeGeneres show might make it onto the list, with reports of the host planning to cancel the show after feeling like it’s no longer a challenge for her.
